Filed under brown glass bottles — start there for the stock moulds, then use the detail below to narrow the spec.

Boston Round bottles are sold wholesale on a standard ladder of six capacities, 1oz (30ml) to 32oz (950ml), with continuous-thread neck finishes running from 20-400 to 33-400. Amber and flint (clear) are the stock colors. Because the finishes follow GPI (Glass Packaging Institute) standards, closures from US suppliers fit them, so size, color and closure are the three things to settle; pricing is quoted per project.

The capacity on a label is not automatically the figure a mold is sold under. Brimful and nominal capacity are different conventions, and our glass bottle size chart explains which to use when writing a label claim.

Glass color and compliance standards

Boston Rounds are made in soda-lime glass. Amber and flint are the common colors; cobalt blue and green are specialty options. Amber is chosen for function: below 450nm it stops roughly 90 percent of UV light. Put a tincture, an essential oil or a photoreactive chemical in clear glass instead and measurable degradation shows within months.

Three references come up in a specification. GPI finish standards govern the neck dimensions, which is why a 20-400 bottle takes any GPI-compliant 20-400 closure. USP Type III is the glass standard cited for pharmaceutical and supplement use. FDA 21 CFR is the food-contact reference, and the documentation for it should be requested with the lot.

Why the shape and its closures are standard

Three features define the profile: a straight cylindrical body, a round shoulder flowing into a short neck without a step, and a continuous-thread (CT) finish. The shoulder pours cleanly, has no corner where product collects, and spreads impact stress better than a square shoulder does. The straight body gives a large label area for its volume and packs efficiently into partitioned cartons.

The shape has been a default for essential oils, tinctures, extracts and laboratory chemicals for over a century, so closure makers everywhere produce caps, droppers, pumps and sprayers for its finishes. For a 2oz bottle on a 20-400 neck, domestic US suppliers alone offer thousands of off-the-shelf closures. For contract fillers, compounding pharmacies and oil brands, that means the components are never tied to one vendor.

Choosing a size and closure by product

Essential oils and aromatherapy

The category norm is an amber 1oz or 2oz bottle fitted with a glass or bulb dropper. Pure essential oils are better served by an orifice reducer, the plastic insert that meters drops, while blends take a dropper. Other formats are compared on the essential oil bottles page, and matching dropper parts on the dropper glass bottles page.

Tinctures and liquid supplements

Here 2oz and 4oz with calibrated droppers lead. Glass removes the plasticizer-migration question that PET raises with alcohol-based formulas; amber glass does not interact with a 60 percent ethanol tincture even after years of storage. Cobalt blue is popular for standing out on the shelf, though amber gives better light protection.

Chemicals, reagents and concentrates

Acids, solvents and reagents go into 16oz and 32oz bottles, flint or amber, closed by a phenolic cap with a cone liner. The phenolic shell resists chemicals and the polycone liner seals by compression, a pairing laboratories have specified since the mid-twentieth century. The same two sizes in amber are what the janitorial and laboratory supply trade expects for a concentrate meant to be diluted.

Regulated drug packaging needs further paperwork, such as extractables statements and DMF support, described under pharmaceutical glass bottles. Brands building a matching amber family across formats can start from the amber glass bottle range.

What to include in a wholesale enquiry

State the capacity, the color, the closure type and what the bottle will hold. If you fill on an automated line, add your capper's torque specification. We then have closure torque retention checked at that range before shipment, which is far cheaper than a lot rejected at your co-packer.

We do not publish a price list. A quote depends on the mold, any decoration, the quantity and the freight terms.

FAQs

What sizes do Boston Round bottles come in?

Six standard sizes: 1oz, 2oz, 4oz, 8oz, 16oz and 32oz. The chart above gives the metric capacity, neck finish and approximate dimensions of each.

Why is amber glass the default for Boston Rounds?

It protects light-sensitive contents by filtering most UV, so the choice is functional and not only a traditional look.

What is the minimum order for wholesale Boston Rounds?

Minimums are quoted per project. They depend on the mold and on the line that runs it.

Do Boston Rounds fit standard US closures?

Yes. A closure made to the GPI standard for the same finish code as the bottle will fit, whether it is a phenolic cap, a sprayer, a pump or a dropper.

Can Boston Round bottles be used for chemicals and solvents?

Yes, in flint or amber with a phenolic polycone-lined cap, the long-standing laboratory combination.

How much do wholesale Boston Round bottles cost?

Cost is quoted per project and moves with the mold, decoration, quantity and freight terms.
