Stopper bottles come in three closure types: ground glass, T-top (bar-top) and crystal or decorative heads. For spirits at 40% ABV, the T-top is the reliable seal, because its compressible shank does the sealing. A ground glass stopper is a friction fit that needs a capsule or wax over it for long storage. In every case the shank and the neck bore must be specified and gauged as a matched pair.
Stopper types compared
| Stopper | How it seals | Suits | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ground glass | Tapered glass shank in a ground glass neck, glass-on-glass friction | Decanters, aromatherapy and laboratory ware opened often | Not vapour-tight for years of spirit storage unless covered by a capsule or wax seal |
| T-top (bar-top) | Compressible shank of natural cork or food-grade synthetic under a rigid head of wood, plastic, glass or metal | Spirits, the industry standard | Shank must be sized to the measured bore |
| Crystal or decorative | A ground or T-top closure carrying a pressed or cut-glass head | High-end spirits and home fragrance | Follows the rules of whichever shank it uses |
A stopper is less forgiving than the closure on a cork-sealed glass bottle, where a compressible natural material absorbs some variation. Decorative heads are often developed alongside glass reed diffuser bottles so a fragrance line shares one look.

Specifying a ground glass stopper
A ground joint is machined, not moulded. Shank and bore are both ground to a 1:10 taper and left with a fine matte surface. Hold the neck bore to ±0.15mm, which is half the tolerance of a cork bore.
Fit is accepted with the lift test. Insert the stopper dry and lift by its head: it should carry the weight of the empty bottle, then let go with a quarter turn. For laboratory and aromatherapy ware, ask for match-ground paired lots, in which each stopper is fitted to its own bottle.
The joint lets alcohol vapour escape slowly. A retail spirits decanter therefore needs a shrink capsule or wax dip over the stopper to become a multi-year closure.
Specifying a T-top for spirits
Choose the shank before the head. The shank makes the seal, and the head only carries the brand.
- Natural cork shank. It costs more and varies more, but the pull of a real cork helps sell ultra-premium bottles.
- Synthetic shank. Food-grade synthetic, typically expanded polymer, is made for contact with 40-60% ABV. It will not dry out, crumble or add flavour as natural cork can in high-proof service, and its even extraction force matters on automated lines.
Make the shank 1.0-1.5mm wider than the measured bore, and long enough to leave 2-4mm inside the neck below the head. Bottle bodies for these closures include 50ml miniature liquor bottles and the formats in our guide to 75cl rum bottles.
Typical bottle and stopper kits
| Kit | Bottle | Stopper | Shank | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decanter | 750 ml flint decanter | Ground glass stopper | Glass, 1:10 taper | Whisky or brandy gift |
| Bar-top, wood | 500 ml spirits round | T-top with turned wood head | Synthetic | Craft gin or rum |
| Bar-top, alloy | 700 ml spirits tall | T-top with zinc-alloy head | Natural cork | Vodka |
| Crystal | 500 ml decanter square | Pressed crystal head | Ground glass | XO or limited edition |
| Fragrance | 100 ml apothecary | Glass ball stopper | Ground glass | Reed diffuser or oils |
A kit covers the bottle, the stopper and a standard capsule where one applies. Kits are quoted per project.

Matching and testing the pair before production
Stopper projects go wrong when bottle and closure are bought from separate suppliers against nominal drawings. Work in this order:
- Freeze the bottle drawing with a bore tolerance: ±0.15mm for a ground joint, ±0.3mm for a T-top.
- Pull 20 production samples and gauge how the actual bore is distributed.
- Size the shank to the measured average, not the nominal figure.
- Store the paired kit inverted at 40°C in a 7-day test and weigh it; accept under 0.5% loss.
- Check extraction force, or torque, across 30 samples for consistency.
For spirits, add a 30-day upright hold at ambient temperature. It confirms that alcohol vapour in the headspace does not react with the shank or a cap liner. When we coordinate bottle and stopper as one kit, the pairs are gauged to each other before shipment and a single party answers for the fit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get crystal or decorative stoppers for a fragrance line?
Yes. Send the neck drawing of your bottle and the shank is matched to that bore.
What minimum order applies to stopper bottles and to stoppers alone?
Minimums are quoted per project. They depend on the bottle mould, the stopper type and head material, and the quantity. Send capacity, neck finish, closure type, quantity and destination port through the quote form.
