Part of our series on essential oil bottles in bulk — read the overview first if the format is new to you.
The roller bottle most wholesale buyers end up specifying is a 10ml glass body with an 18mm neck finish and a 10mm ball, in amber or cobalt blue when the oil needs UV protection. Leaks in bulk lots mostly come from a fitment that does not match the neck, so buy the bottle and fitment as one matched set and ask for leak-test evidence. Price and minimum quantity are quoted per project; decoration, quantity, the number of bottle bodies and freight terms are what move them.
Sizes, neck finishes and ball diameters
Three figures define a roller bottle: capacity, neck finish (the thread size on the glass) and ball diameter. The 10 ml size leads aromatherapy roll-on blends, while 5 ml is the sample and travel format. A 10 mm ball is big enough for product to flow smoothly and small enough to dose accurately on pulse points.
| Capacity | Neck finish | Ball | Glass colours | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 ml | 13 mm / 18 mm | 7–10 mm | Amber, cobalt, clear | Samples, travel sets, perfume oils |
| 10 ml | 18 mm | 10 mm | Amber, cobalt, clear, frosted | Roll-on blends for aromatherapy retail |
| 15 ml | 18 mm | 10 mm | Amber, clear | Skincare serums and eye treatments |
| 30 ml | 18 mm / 20 mm | 10 mm | Clear, frosted | Body oils and massage blends |
Amber and cobalt blue make up most orders because they filter UV for light-sensitive oils. Clear flint and frosted glass belong mainly to skincare, where the colour of the formula helps sell it.

Stainless steel or glass ball
Ball material changes how the product feels and what it can hold. Stainless steel, in 304 or 316 grade, glides most smoothly and passes the most product. It is the common choice in aromatherapy retail and works with most aromatherapy and skincare formulas. A glass ball is fully inert, which makes it the option for aggressive formulas, and it lets a brand describe the pack as all glass.
With either ball, ask for a housing moulded in virgin PP and a defined interference between ball and seat. That fit is what holds the ball in place and keeps oil behind it.
Why the fitment decides quality
The glass body is close to a commodity, priced on weight and colour. The fitment, meaning the ball plus its housing, is where a low quote usually saves its money. Two shortcuts recur: polypropylene housings made too small, which crack when the cap is torqued down, and balls with a rough surface finish that scratch the seat until it leaks.
A fitment has to match the neck finish it is pressed into. We check that the bottle and the fitment come from matched tooling, and that cap torque is tested batch by batch, before a lot is released for shipment.

Leak testing and filling-line checks
A leak test worth accepting fills the bottle with a simulant, inverts it at 40°C for 72 hours and passes only on zero seepage at the ball seat. Ask for the certificate to travel with the order, alongside the cap torque record.
Check your own line too. Most benchtop piston fillers accept a 10ml roller bottle, but pressing in the fitment tends to be a manual or semi-automatic step below 5,000 units per day. Request production-representative samples and run them through the actual filler and capper before you commit to a bulk order.
What moves the quote
Quantity bands correspond to real changes in how a job is produced: a stock body with no decoration at the low end, one-colour screen printing above that, then multi-colour print and custom cap colours, and full customisation at the largest volumes. Two choices help a buyer at any size.
- Fewer bottle bodies. One body carrying three label designs counts as a single larger quantity; three separate bodies do not.
- A call-off schedule. Committing to an annual volume and shipping it quarterly lets the plant plan the run while you pay as you draw stock.
Freight can be consolidated as well. If the same range needs glass dropper bottles, they can ship with the roller bottles. To start, send target sizes and annual volume through the quote form.
Frequently asked questions
What is the MOQ for wholesale essential oil roller bottles?
It is quoted per project. The mould and the line it runs on set the minimum, and decoration adds its own threshold.
Can sizes and colours be mixed in one order?
Within reason, yes. Pallets of 5ml and 10ml in amber and cobalt can travel in one shipment. Each SKU is still counted on its own quantity, which is why reducing the number of bottle bodies has the largest effect on the quote.
Do roller bottles meet US and EU cosmetic packaging rules?
Ask the supplier to document the glass against FDA 21 CFR food-contact requirements and EU cosmetic packaging migration limits, and keep those declarations with the order file.
