Bulk glass pump bottles are specified in three steps: the dose per stroke, the neck finish, and the fit between pump and formula. A standard lotion pump gives 0.8–1.2ml per stroke, a treatment pump 0.15–0.4ml and a high-output dispenser 2–4ml. 24/410 is the usual finish for 30–150ml personal-care bottles and 28/410 for 150–500ml bottles and viscous products. Order the bottle, pump and dip tube as one tested set, because a pump approved on one bottle drawing can weep on another.

Setting the dose per stroke

The output of the pump is the serving size of the product, so it shapes how the pack is used and valued. A 100ml serum bottle fitted with a 0.25ml treatment pump gives 400 uses. Fit the same bottle with a 1.0ml lotion pump and it becomes a 100-use product that the customer will judge quite differently.

Pump typeOutput per strokeTypical contents
Treatment pump0.15–0.4mlSerums
Standard lotion pump0.8–1.2mlLotions
High-output dispenser pump2–4mlSoaps and sauces

Two further figures belong next to the dose. The first is output tolerance: ±10% is commercial grade, while ±5% is the tighter grade that matters for dosed actives. The second is the priming count, meaning the number of presses before product first appears. A pump that needs eight presses to prime earns one-star reviews.

Choosing between 20/410, 24/410 and 28/410

A finish code has two parts. The first number is the outer diameter of the thread in millimeters. The second is the GPI thread style, and 410 denotes a single full turn with a deep thread.

FinishBottle size it suitsStrengthsLimits
20/41015–50ml serum bottlesKeeps a small bottle slim and elegantNarrower choice of pumps
24/41030–150ml personal-care bottlesWidest range of pumps and actuator styles; closure torque around 10–14 in-lbfLess suited to thick formulas in large bottles
28/410150–500ml bottlesLarger bore takes thicker dip tubes and high-output enginesHigh-output pumps call for a reinforced neck ring

The glass matters as much as the pump. Tolerance on the T dimension of the finish is ±0.15–0.2mm, which is enough for a pump that sealed on one bottle to leak on a bottle made to a different drawing. For that reason a set should be torque-tested as a pair.

Matching the pump to the formula

Most compatibility failures trace back to one of four parameters. State all of them in the enquiry and the pump can be chosen as a tested engine.

Viscosity

Standard engines handle roughly 1,000–20,000 cP. Thin oils below 50 cP need a low-viscosity valve, or the pump dribbles. Above 20,000 cP, ask for a large-bore engine with a strengthened spring; without it the dose collapses when the temperature falls. Quote the cP figure at filling temperature, not the figure from the lab bench.

Chemistry

Stainless springs corrode in high-alcohol or acidic formulas, so hand-sanitizer-style products need an external-spring or all-plastic engine. Formulas high in oil swell standard gaskets; request FKM or EPDM instead.

Dip tube length

The tube is cut to the bottle height minus 3–5mm. That lets it reach the heel of the bottle without kinking against the base. A 45° angled cut with a flare stops the end from sealing itself against the glass.

Neck strength

Pressing a pump puts lever load on the finish. Bottles intended for 28/410 high-output pumps should therefore have a reinforced neck ring.

Locking heads and transit protection

Pumps tend to fail in shipment, not on the shelf, so the sales channel decides the head style.

  • Down-lock heads twist to lock in the pressed-down position. This seals the engine and survives parcel drops, which makes it the standard for e-commerce.
  • Up-lock (twist-lock) heads lock in the raised position and suit retail trays.
  • Shrink bands over the closure are the usual way to show tampering, because pilfer bands do not adapt to pump engines.

Air freight needs particular care. Cabin-pressure cycles actuate an unlocked pump and push product into the cap thread. For any air or parcel route, name the down-lock or transit-clip option explicitly and ask for a 24-hour inversion leak test on the matched set before it ships.

Where a pump is not the right dispenser, dropper glass bottles handle dosed serums and essential oil roller bottles apply product directly to the skin. Glass colour and material choices are covered under flint glass bottles.

What to put in the enquiry

  1. Formula viscosity in cP and chemistry (alcohol %, oil %, pH). These select the engine, spring and gasket.
  2. Dose per stroke in ml with the acceptable tolerance, plus a priming-stroke limit if it matters.
  3. The finish (20/410, 24/410 or 28/410), or the bottle drawing so the finish can be matched.
  4. The sales channel. Parcels need down-lock heads or transit clips; retail trays accept up-lock.
  5. Matched-set testing for each lot: torque window, dip-tube cut length and a 24-hour inversion leak test.

Send these through the quote request form. Transit clips and shrink bands are quoted on request.

Buyer FAQ

Are pumps supplied with the bottles?

They can be. We quote matched sets of bottle, pump engine, actuator and dip tube cut to the bottle height, tested together. This avoids the familiar failure of a pump chosen from a drawing that never met the actual glass.

Is 24/410 or 28/410 the better choice?

Take 24/410 for bottles up to about 150ml, where it offers the broadest selection of pumps and actuators. Move to 28/410 above 150ml, or at any size when the formula is viscous.

What are the minimum order and timing for pump bottle sets?

Both are quoted per project. They depend on the mould, the decoration, the pump specification and the production line the bottle runs on.
