A miniature bottle for a spirit tasting kit is specified by four things: capacity, the neck finish with its matching closure, the usable label panel, and the carton count. Of these, the label panel causes the most trouble, because printable area shrinks faster than volume as a bottle gets smaller. Settle all four against your artwork and your full-size bottle before any sample is made.
Decide what carries over from the full-size bottle
Most kit briefs ask for 30ml or 50ml minis across three to six expressions, and expect each one to look like a small version of the bottle on the shelf. That expectation is rarely written down, so write it down. Say which features are fixed and which can move.
Take a 750ml line in green glass with a natural cork. The mini should keep that identity even if the closure has to change. Once we know which elements are fixed, we can propose a mini specification that still reads as the same brand.
Let the artwork set the capacity and shape
The height of the usable label panel depends on the bottle drawing, the shoulder shape and the clearance the label needs. It cannot be guessed from capacity alone, so send the final artwork with its dimensions along with the brief. The artwork determines the panel, and the panel then narrows the choice of bottle.
If the design cannot be reduced, the fix is a different bottle, either a taller 50ml mini or a wider shape, chosen before glass is ordered.
Shape also affects how the label behaves. A curve that takes a label without complaint on a 750ml bottle can make it wrinkle or lift on a 30ml one, particularly close to the shoulder. Flat-faced minis give the cleanest adhesion. On a round mini, keep the artwork inside the flat middle band.
Choose the decoration method
Minis take the same decoration as full-size bottles.
| Method | Suits | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure-sensitive label | Full-colour artwork; the usual choice for sample kits | Adhesive has to be tested on the glass surface before the production run |
| Screen printing | Simple logos | Poor fit for variable text such as batch numbers |
The two can be combined on one bottle, for example a printed logo with a labelled batch panel.
Match the neck finish and the closure
A 30ml mini commonly has a smaller neck finish than a 750ml bottle, so the cap from your full-size line will not fit it. Specify the finish and the closure as a pair.
ROPP caps, the roll-on pilfer-proof closures familiar from full-size spirits, exist in miniature formats and preserve the tamper-evident look. Screw caps are simpler to apply when the filling run is small, but they do not look like a traditional spirits closure. Whichever you choose, ask for a torque test on the mini itself, so you know the cap holds its seal through filling and through courier handling.
Plan the carton before you count bottles
Minis pack densely, which is good for freight and bad for breakage. A typical carton holds several hundred 30ml bottles, separated by dividers between rows so that no two bottles touch when the carton vibrates. Protection comes from the pack design, so the carton configuration should be confirmed at the same time as the bottle.
Order a small overage to cover transit breakage; spare bottles are less disruptive than a reorder. If the kit is tied to a launch, count freight time into the schedule.
What to send with the brief
Sample and bulk timing, and the quantity terms, are quoted per project; they depend on the bottle chosen, the decoration, the volume and the freight arrangement. To get an accurate answer, send:
- the capacity of each SKU and how many expressions the kit contains;
- whether you prefer ROPP or screw, plus the finish of your full-size bottle if the mini has to match it;
- label artwork at final dimensions;
- the target carton count or unit volume;
- the launch date.
Before a sample is produced, you should have written confirmation of the finish, the closure torque rating, the usable label panel and the carton layout. You can compare full-size and miniature formats in our wine and spirit glass bottle collection, then send us your artwork and target volume so we can check the mini specification against a suitable plant.
