One of our guides on wholesale spice jars; start there for the overview.
Stock salt and pepper shakers are clear flint glass bodies of 2 oz, 3 oz or 4 oz with a standard neck finish, bought by the case with a perforated, chrome, flip-top or grinder top. The standard 2 oz shaker packs 144 to a master case and roughly 5,700 to 6,500 to a pallet. Case pricing is quoted per project and depends on the body, the top, the quantity and the freight terms, so what you can settle first is the body size, the top and the neck finish.
Stock body sizes and what each is used for
The market settled on a few proven shaker shapes long ago, which is why stock moulds exist and why most buyers have no need for custom tooling. What you are choosing between is glass quality, cap fit and reliable supply.
| Body | Form | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 2 oz (60ml) | Panel shaker, square or round, stainless screw top | Table salt and pepper in restaurants; retail spice with a sifter fitment |
| 3 oz (90ml) | Same style, larger fill | Back-of-house and buffet service, where refills are less frequent; retail spice |
| 4 oz (120ml) | Straight-sided, wider mouth | Coarse grinds, crushed pepper and flaky finishing salts that jam a narrow opening |
| 4 oz to 6 oz | Grinder or pour-spout jar | Rubs and blends for retail |
Every stock body is clear flint soda-lime glass and dishwasher-safe. The neck finish is a standard one, so a replacement top is never a proprietary part. A seasoning brand that also sells pantry jars can match its shakers visually to the stock sizes in our wholesale glass spice jar range.

Tops and the two fit checks
The top does the work of a shaker. Stock programs offer four families:
- Perforated stainless screw tops. The restaurant standard, with a fine hole pattern for salt and a coarse one for pepper, and very cheap to replace.
- Chrome-plated tops. The same function with a dressier look for hotel dining rooms.
- Plastic flip-top and dial tops. Black or white, with the sift-or-pour double opening that shoppers know from grocery spice brands.
- Grinder tops. For retail rubs and blends sold as grinders; they pack more loosely because the mechanism needs protection.
Check two things before a first order. The first is the thread. Stock bodies use common 38mm, 43mm and 48mm finishes, but test the chosen top on the exact body, because a loose top on a table shaker draws a complaint straight away. The second is the liner. In a humid kitchen, ask for tops with a foam or plastisol liner so the salt does not cake.
Glass bodies are fully dishwasher safe, and stainless tops stand up to commercial machines. Plastic and grinder tops should be washed by hand or on the top rack to protect the mechanism.
Who buys stock and when custom makes sense
Three kinds of buyer account for most stock volume, and each has a different priority.
- Restaurant groups and foodservice distributors buy on durability and replacement cost. A busy casual-dining table loses its shakers every few months to drops, dishroom abuse and walk-outs, so they want a sturdy body with a standard top.
- Hotels and caterers buy on consistency. Every table in every property has to match, and a stock mould reordered two years apart gives the same body.
- Private-label spice and seasoning brands buy on speed, using a labelled stock shaker to test retail channels before committing to custom packaging.
Stay with stock while you are testing channels, while volume is under about 50,000 units a year, when replacement-part compatibility counts for more than shelf distinction, or when the budget is better spent on the seasoning than on the package. Many spice brands settle on a middle route: a stock glass body, a custom top colour, and a silk-screened or labelled brand mark. That also answers the common question of whether a brand can go on a stock shaker without a custom mould. It can.
Buyers putting together a wider tabletop set can add stock containers from the glass jars with lids collection for sugar, parmesan and condiment service.
Case and pallet quantities
| Item | Inner box | Master case | Per pallet |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 oz shaker | 24 | 144 | Roughly 5,700 to 6,500 |
| 3 oz shaker | 12 | 72 to 96 | About 3,800 to 4,300 |
| Grinder-top units | 48 to 60 |
Grinder-top units pack more loosely because the mechanism needs protection. A 40-foot container holds about 110,000 to 130,000 two-ounce shakers.
Shakers are small and dense, and the cartons are robust, so a single pallet moves at a favourable freight class for domestic LTL buyers. Tops come in your choice of the four families, matched to the neck finish of the body, and replacement tops can be ordered separately.

Packing, receiving and storage
Decide whether tops travel fitted or bagged separately. Fitted tops protect the threads in transit but add labour at your filling line. Bagged tops save line time and carry a small risk of thread damage.
Well-packed stock shakers should arrive with breakage under 0.5 percent. At receiving, open two or three cases per pallet and photograph any crushed cartons before the driver leaves.
Shakers tolerate warehouse temperature swings that would worry a buyer of hot-fill jars. Humidity is the thing to avoid, because it spots stainless tops and weakens cardboard, so keep pallets dry. Demand is steady through the year with a modest rise before the holiday catering season, and there is no sharp seasonal crunch of the kind canning jars see.
One saving is often missed: ship tops and bodies together. Tops weigh almost nothing next to glass, so a year of replacement tops adds very little freight to a container order, while buying them later means small-parcel rates for a commodity item. Work out the top-to-body ratio you really consume, typically 1.1 tops per body for foodservice accounts, and put the difference in the original order.
Questions about bulk shaker orders
What is the minimum order for stock glass shakers?
We quote minimums per project. They depend on the mould and on the line it runs on.
Are tops included with the shakers?
Yes. Each body is supplied with the top you choose, in perforated stainless, chrome, plastic flip-top or grinder style, fitted to its neck finish.
Can herb and botanical packaging ship in the same order?
Yes. Buyers who order shakers as part of a wider packaging program often consolidate them with jar formats to fill a container efficiently.
