For comparison, most wine, spirits and oil programmes start from 750ml bottles.

For a 16 oz (473ml) glass bottle, choose the neck finish before the shape: 38-2000 or 38-405 continuous thread for juice and functional drinks, a 43mm or 48mm lug for hot-fill sauces, and a crown or 28mm PCO-style finish on pressure-rated glass for kombucha. Packed 12 per case, a pallet holds 72 to 84 cases, or roughly 860 to 1,000 bottles. Prices and minimums are quoted per project and depend on the mould, glass weight, quantity and freight terms.

Neck finishes used on 16 oz bottles

The finish fixes your closure, your capping equipment and how the customer opens the bottle. These are the common ones at this size.

FinishClosureTypical product
38-2000 or 38-405 continuous threadTamper-evident plastic capJuice, functional drinks
43mm or 48mm lug (twist-off)Metal lug cap that pulls a vacuum as the product coolsHot-fill sauces, salsas
28mm PCO-styleStandard beverage capCarbonated kombucha
CrownPry-off crown capFermented drinks

A shared number does not mean a shared fit. A 38-2000 cap will not seat on a 38-405 neck because the thread profiles are different. Get the finish drawing and have your closure supplier confirm the match in writing.

Then try the bottle on the real filling line before a container is ordered. A one-hour trial with samples settles questions that a long email thread will not. If you are specifying a family of sizes, our bottle size chart shows which finishes go with which capacities.

Bottle requirements by product

A 16 oz bottle specified for one category is not automatically safe for another. Each product loads the glass in its own way.

Kombucha

Secondary fermentation inside the bottle can reach 30 to 50 PSI. Specify glass rated for carbonated beverages, with the wall thickness to match, and a finish for pry-off crowns or pressure-rated screw caps. The rating should be written on the spec sheet; 4.0 volumes of CO2 is a common minimum for bottle-conditioned product. Bottles pushed past their rating are the ones that fail on a warm warehouse shelf, and a standard juice bottle is not safe for this use. Pressure-rated shapes are listed on our kombucha bottle page.

Cold-pressed and HPP juice

Juice sells on colour, so clear glass matters. The mouth has to be wide enough to fill pulpy product quickly, and retail requires a tamper-evident closure. More detail is in the juice bottle guide.

Sauces and dressings

Hot-fill sauces go in at 180 to 195 degrees Fahrenheit, so the glass must be annealed and rated for thermal shock, and closed with a lug or continuous-thread cap that forms a vacuum. Thick products need a mouth of at least 38mm, and chunky salsas do better at 43mm or 48mm. Oil-based dressings are the exception: they pour best through a narrow finish fitted with a reducer. Other sauce formats are compared on the sauce bottle page.

Shape

Round bottles lead in all three categories, and the Boston round is the most versatile single profile. If you want one silhouette across several sizes, the Boston round range lists its neck options size by size.

Closure liners and torque checks

For cold-fill juice and functional drinks, state two things alongside the tamper-evident cap: the liner material (foam for most juices, an induction-seal compatible liner where more assurance is wanted) and the application torque range your capper delivers.

On hot-fill sauces the liner compound has to suit both the fill temperature and the acidity. Plastisol covers standard hot-fill work. High-acid tomato products need an acid-resistant formulation.

Whatever the product, check torque retention 24 hours after filling on every production run. Liners compress and caps loosen, and it costs far less to catch that drift in the plant than to hear about leakers from a retailer. Ask for torque and seal test results for the bottle-and-cap pairing when samples are sent. A supplier who has none for a standard pairing has told you something useful.

Case, pallet and container planning

The reference pack is a flint beverage bottle with a 38mm tamper-evident cap, 12 per case, 72 to 84 cases per pallet, giving roughly 860 to 1,000 bottles. Pressure-rated kombucha bottles use heavier glass, which raises the unit cost.

A filled case of 12 weighs about 20 to 24 pounds. That keeps it under common parcel surcharges, which helps brands shipping direct to consumers.

Glass of this size is dense freight. A container reaches its payload limit before it looks full, so plan loads by weight. Once production is running, hold safety stock near your filler: carrying glass costs little compared with a line stopped while a retail order is due.

Why brands settle on the pint

Customers already understand a pint. It is a full serving of kombucha or cold-pressed juice, it chills quickly and it shelves densely. For food, it is the size grocery buyers expect for sauces, salsas and dressings, and it fits standard shelf plans.

On the line, the bottle is large enough to keep filling speed per ounce high. The glass thickness at this size also tolerates both hot filling and moderate carbonation, so one well-chosen mould can carry a brand through several product generations.

FAQs about 16 oz glass bottles

Is there a minimum order?

It is set per project. The mould and the production line it runs on determine the minimum.

Which bottle is safe for carbonated kombucha?

One made in a pressure-rated mould, good for at least 4.0 volumes of CO2, with a crown or pressure-rated screw finish.

What does a 16 oz bottle cost delivered to the US?

We quote each project individually. Glass weight, decoration, quantity and freight terms are the main variables.

Can the bottle take a hot-fill sauce?

Yes, if it is annealed and rated for thermal shock, and the cap liner suits your fill temperature and acidity.

How long does an order take?

Timing is confirmed with the quote, once the mould, any decoration and the plant's schedule are known.
